This custom-made Vertical Garden using modular planting system with metal structure integrated with automated watering system.

Growing plants on a vertical structure surface has been made possible after years of research and studies of natural vertical locations — particularly involving places without soil where in nature there may be a great abundance of plant hybrids growing at certain locations.

The concept is quite similar to these locations. Vertical garden function without soil, thus making it possible to have very light weight surface making it easy to grow plants, install and maintenance of the vertical garden.

Vertical Garden Design Process

Each vertical garden is given a unique design and specification with specially selected species of plants. The design of this vertical structure and composition of plants takes into consideration the specific location where it will be built, environmental issues such as the local and micro climate, sun light and the surrounding area. The main objective is to create a very unique vertical garden that stands beautifully through all year round with minimum maintenance.

A well plan with excellent design vertical garden is also a way to minimize the future maintenance demand of the garden. A characteristic of a plant, its species, growth habit, color and size on a vertical surface is of a significant importance when making the selection, in order to produce a stunning and impressive vertical garden. Selecting the right type of plants for the right location and building is vital for any vertical garden.

As a decorative feature wall, plants mounted and grown on the vertical structure surface can be fascinating, its growing and always changing. Much of its work is put into the aesthetic part of the vertical garden, and part of it is to develop this attractive and sensational of nature and unpredictability of characteristics of creepers and plants have within themselves.

Vertical garden concept can be applied in almost any location and building spaces as a living material, the potential of integrating nature in our urban environments can be very interesting. In places where horizontal space is very constraint, vertical planting is the best solution.

Vertical Garden Structure

There are several types of supporting structure available for the construction and installation of vertical garden system. Various materials ranging from aluminum, stainless steel to PVC can be used to construct and install the structure supporting the plants. The most import point one will have to take into consideration when constructing and installing the vertical garden structure is to provide sufficient gap space between the structure and the wall, this is a prevention against moisture.

with concrete planter base and structure.

The quantity and varieties of plants required depending on the size of the vertical structure. The most common method of the planting system used for vertical garden is to use  PVC or fiberglass board, on top of the board, a multi-layered, synthetic and highly absorbent felt is attached on its surface. It enables evenly distribution of water over the surface and provides mechanical support for the plants as they grow attached to the felt. A cut is made in the outer layer of the felt and the plants are placed in between. Since we are not using any soil on the surface of the vertical garden structure, the construction is very light weight, approximately about 24 kg per square meter inclusive of plants depending on the type of plants being used. In average the surface depth is increased within 20 cm to 50 cm.

As the supporting structure is easily adapts to any geometry, a vertical garden can be easily and totally integrated into the interior and exterior environment.
There are also other design options available apart for the one on top. We normally will discuss and provide the details specification and configuration  of our proposed vertical garden design directly with our clients. Design and cost varies from client to client and countries to countries depending on the design requirement, materials, vertical structural specifications, type and quantity of plants, distance, destinations, shipment and freight charges, transportation, import or export duties, government taxes and several other factors.

We also undertake supply and construction of vertical garden system in accordance to your architect and designer’s design and specifications. There are hundreds of suitable plants that we can supply for vertical garden system. Detail of plants will normally be submitted to cliens together with our design proposal and cost estimates.

Vertical Garden Plants Watering System
The irrigation system is designed to minimize water consumption. It consists of an automation-unit with equipment for control of nutrient injection and irrigation cycles. When a surface has a variation of sun exposures, the irrigation is divided into segments in order to program it specifically for each part. Within the multi-layered felt surface a drip-tube is integrated. Water consumption varies with heat and sun exposure, but compared to normal green spaces or a lawn, the consumption is normally lower. It averages between 2-5 l/m2/day.

Vertical Garden Lighting

Natural sunlight normally delivers over 100.000 lux whereas the average electric light level in a building is around 200-500 lux. Artificial light is necessary for all indoor garden. Some plants will survice well at 900 lux, but a some increased of lighting level at some areas of the vertical garden surface will be better for variation of species that have been planted. An artificially illuminated surface has moving lighting levels, due to the fact that light reduces with the square of the distance from the light source. Some areas might have more lux and others less lux. The vertical garden design is produced taken this into consideration, taking advantage of the higher levels for certain plant species.

Artificial light is not only a necessity for the plants survival and growth, but it also enchance the garden making it more beautiful as lighting effects brings out colors and textures of the various type of plants used for the vertical garden. A suitable light source is the metal halide. It produces the essential wave-lengths that plants need and is an energy-saving and cost-efficient alternative. Through an initial computer simulation, a study is made to calculate the required number and model of armatures. Finally, the levels are measured on location to fine-tune the setup. Using computer simulation will helps to distribute of lights more efficiently.

Vertical Garden Maintenance

As the supply of the basic needs of plants (light, water and nutrients) are automated, not only does this make for unusually healthy plants - it highly reduces maintenance demand and makes the vertical garden possible to use on high buildings or other places where accessibility is limited.

The garden is designed so that the plants´ natural growth habit is given space, and for different species to have a dynamic co-habitat with adjacent species. During a year, the garden will profit from pruning approximately 1-2 times per year. All plants that are used are perennial, but as the years go by, a few will have to be replaced. These maintenance measures will ensure a long term lush and attractive garden.

The Realization of a Project

The initial work includes studies of the local climate and the future location to see what site specific factors there are to consider. This will give the limits for what plants that may be used and is important information in the following survey of nursery stock from those nurseries, foreign or local, that can deliver to the location.

As the general conditions are defined, the design plan is developed in order to attain the desired character. It is during the design phase that the final selection of species is made, based on physical conditions, aesthetic preferences and availability.

At the construction site, the first step is to set up the supporting structure and make necessary preparations for the irrigation. When the technical system is completed with the mounting of the felt and the integrated drip-tube - the surface is ready for plantation. During the whole process a dialogue is kept with the architect and client in order to achieve the desired result.

Plants Requirements

Growing plants on a vertical surface without soil is actually more natural than with it, because rarely could soil be found on vertical surfaces in nature. Soilless vertical surfaces however, are abundant, and so are plant species that thrive in such conditions — on rocks and cliff faces or branches and trunks of trees. A soil less surface have characteristics which is of significant  importance for these mounting plants.
Epiphytic plants are commonly found in tropical countries where humidity is high and frequent rains is vital for such a growing location. Asplenium Nidus also known as Bird Nest is a typical example of epiphytes. Another examples are Philodendron, Anthurium and Monstera.

Lithophytic plants can be found, in many countries around the world, an area with an unusually diverse flora, along the coast and mountain ranges are the kind of places to look for these type of plants species.

Saxi fragaceae is a hybrid of plants  found growing on rocks and dead tree trunks. These are not the only plants available or can be used for vertical garden system, there are more plants species that we can offer for your particular project.

Making the Right Selection

Besides design and aesthetic preferences, choosing the type of plants that have the ability to grow on a surface without soil, vertical location; when making the selection of plants, we have to take into consideration on several factors, like local climate, its temperature, sunlight exposure, changing pattern throughout the year and more. Understanding the prevailing growing conditions is necessary when making decision in choosing the plants for vertical planting.

Plant Supplies for Vertical Garden

To find the right species and quality of plants may not be easy for some landscapers. At Technic it is not impossible, through our strong bonding and co-operation with many nurseries in the region, we are able to supply most of the plants specified by the Architects and Designers without any problem.

Technic Garden and Landscape besides having its own plants nursery, we collaborate with growers that can provide great selection and varieties of tropical plants and plants that can grow in colder temperature. Through the collaboration of regional and local nurseries, we are able to offer a more satisfying solution for most of the vertical garden projects regionally and internationally.

Exterior and Interior Locations

As growing conditions change in exterior locations, same goes to the plants that may be applied for a vertical garden. Designers using varieties and variation in plants enables for more variation of the design. A vertical garden can be built in practically in any location, except for places with very cold climates. The key to this is to choose the right type of plant species for the right location.

Interior temperature is naturally very similar every where across the globe. It is characterized by a temperature around 20° C, low light intensity with multiple times of low humidity. As for the low light temperature area, similar growing conditions just like in the tropical forest. But these conditions seldom click with low humidity, which to some extent restrict the selection of plants for interior vertical garden projects.

Most of the plants adapted to shady environments grow bigger leaves in order to assimilate the small amount of light exposure. Also these plants produce some flowers which contribute in making a beautiful indoor garden. Typical genera used for interior gardens are aroids like Philodendron and Epipremnum, Aeschynanthus and many more. Ferns like Nephrolepis and Pteris can be a good choice but the leaves often drop off easily in a cold temperature location.

Appointing the right company that has many years experience about vertical garden concept is very important. Plants Understanding the vertical growing environment is essential for a successful project and a vertical garden that will thrive for many years to come. Making the right selection of species is — apart from the aesthetic result — also decisive to the plant's life span, their development and to the future demand of maintenance. Technic Garden and Landscape is the right choice for your ideal project.
